when the sun met the moon

I am commissioned by a lot of couples. Most of these commissions include a couple in magical outfits lost in a fantastical woodsy area. I was working on a batch of commissions for Valentines day and realized that I make work like this all the time for other people but never for myself. I came up with the concept of a fantasy warrior couple who are the incarnation of the sun and the moon. The lullaby “You Are My Sunshine” was my favorite as a kid. I started with that idea and it evolved from there. I also included a castle in the background and the iconography implies that the sun and the moon came together and made the earth. The two characters in the illustration are now trusted to guard the earth with the powers from the sun and the moon. I added the border and drew the castle more like a theatre set backdrop rather than a building with perspective to capture a more story book aesthetic. Overall, this was a very fun and whimsical piece to create.
